PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Cluj-Napoca, 9 June 2021 — Starting 11 to 27 June 2021, Reactor de Creație și Experiment, 4, Petőfi Sándor Street, Cluj-Napoca, Romania is hosting “Smaller Side Room”, an exhibition curated by Liviu Bulea. Twenty one artists from fifteen countries are showing their works on different themes and ways of expression, while also having in common their desire for free expression.
“In this exhibition, I have selected queer visual artists who have fought censorship over time in one way or another”, says Liviu Bulea, the curator of the exhibition, adding: “Each of the chosen works deals with the theme of the human body in all its forms, intimate moments of various characters and their fantasies. The exhibition subjects you to an exercise of imagination, offering clues about the authors’ personal approaches. The universe of each of the selected artists is different and every story comes from different backgrounds but what unites them is the desire for free expression”, concludes Bulea.
The title of the exhibition refers to a quote of artist Tom of Finland, which is also the motto of the event. He said: “I know my little 'dirty drawings' are never going to hang in the main salons of the Louvre, but it would be nice if - I would like to say 'when,' but I better say 'if' - our world learns to accept all the different ways of loving. Then maybe I could have a place in one of the smaller side rooms”, concluded Tom of Finland.
The curator selected the works following an open call through social media, but also by direct invitations to some of the artists. Artists Dash Fox (Brazil), Laurence Caron (Canada), Vincent Puren (France), VICARIO (France), Meraj (Iran), Bobb Attard (Malta), Laceoni (Romania / Portugal), Edicleison Freitas (Brazil), Gregory Olivenbaum (Russia), Big Butt Geek (UK), Manel Ortega (UK / Spain), NLMKART (UK), George Kanis (Greece), Ric Stott (UK), Mohamad (Syria / Netherlands), Mihai-Vlăduț Gicoveanu (Romania), Alejandro Monroy Trejo (Mexico), Ignacio Aramburu (Mexico), Paul Mureșan (Romania), Răzvan Ion (Austria), Alan Ciba (USA) are participating.
The exhibition contains nudity and is intended for adults.
